How To Write A Freelance Cover Letter: A Detailed Guide
You may have written cover letters for resumes in the past. You have to do the same thing when you apply for freelance positions that have been posted. The difference is you are not dealing as much with an employer as you are a client. This can be for one project only or a continuing relationship and the cover letter is important. There are some things that you need to assure the prospect within the cover letter.
- The Introduction Should Explain the Position You Are Seeking. This is a standard of the cover letter, but what you should be saying in the opening not only is the position, but a statement expressing confidence in your ability to do the job.
- Showcase Your Credentials. This is the part of the cover letter where you should not be shy at all. You are competing against others and you have to demonstrate how you stand out from all the rest. Try to tie your credentials as close as possible to the advertisement. If the posting says they are looking for someone with SEO experience, show that you are the person for the job.
- Indicate Whom You Work For in the past. Name prior clients and companies for whom you have done service. Using bullets makes it easier for the reader and always offer references on request.
- Stress Your Time Management Skills. The client is not to be standing over your shoulder watching you work. You have command of your work schedule and you should emphasize that everything you do is delivered either on time or before the deadline.
- Ask If Additional Information Is Needed and Suggest an Interview. Let the reader know that you will supply whatever additional information is needed. You can end the cover letter with a phrase such as: “I would welcome the opportunity to explore this opportunity with you further. I’m available for interview at your earliest convenience.”
- Follow up with a Prospective Client. Let them know that you will be doing a follow-up in the near future. When you do that, be as courteous as possible. If a rejection should occur thank them graciously for the opportunity.
Rejection can happen and your professional of it can leave a very favorable impression on the prospect. It is entirely possible that future work may be available and leaving a favorable impression will help. As with any letter make certain that you have proofed it, and there are no typos or grammatical errors. The cover letter can be a very effective marketing piece and you should take your time in composing it.
